• I’ll read just about any “ballet book” but I was super disappointed with BRIGHT BURNING STARS. There’s a lack of development in everything from the characters to the setting to ballet itself. The summary makes the book sound far more magical and compelling than it is.
  
  Marine and Kate have spent most of their lives pursuing a position in the Opera’s corps de ballet; at the end of this school year, only one girl in the class will be chosen. But why do they dance? Marine has musicality and a promise to her dead brother…? Kate’s mother abandoned her and for some reason she took up dance…? I don’t understand. I also don’t understand why, if Kate is so driven to be the chosen girl, she becomes boy crazy and has sex without thinking of the possible consequences. That whole storyline, with the school’s beekeeper??? stepping into help and a lack of reflection or impact… eh. Why go there if you aren’t going to examine it?
  
  And the Demigod thing… I find it hard to believe a girl who has spent years working towards a goal would suddenly “fall in love.” I could see wanting to be his partner for rankings advancement, but Kate felt like a kid to me instead of a teenager.
  
  BRIGHT BURNING STARS could have taken place anywhere. I never really felt like the book was set in France. Sprinkling some French phrases does not make me think of Paris. And how in the heck did American Kate make it into such a prestigious French school?
  
  As for the dancing sections mentioning the name of a move does not allow me to picture it, or to know how the characters are moving. Sure, I like ballet books, but I don’t know what every single term means. For the longest time, I was confused about the woolen overalls the characters wore, because the author never described them! Amplify that confusion with dance terms like “soubresaut.”
  
  The more I think about BRIGHT BURNING STARS, the more questions I have, which is frustrating for me as a reader.
• I wanted to like this book but I found myself losing myself within the pages of it and not in a good way. The book started out good. In fact, I stuck with it for about the first several chapters but than the winds shifted and my interest changed.
  
  There was nothing interesting about the characters In addition, the story seemed to stall and move really slowly. The style of this book to me came off as juvenile. This may because the book is written for the young adult. After getting half way into the book, I put it down. I could not even tell you what happened previously as I fell asleep and there was nothing memorable about what I read.
• The novel is written in 1st person from the point of view of two characters who are best friends and roommates at an elite dance school. They alternate narrating each chapter. I didn't find it very engaging but I think it's an interesting stylistic choice. The characters didn't seem different enough from each other to the extent that I didn't pick up on it being two narrators for awhile.
  
  An interesting first novel idea but I didn't get into it.
• This just didn't work for me. I found nothing new in this story that I hadn't already read before and I found the characters lacking in depth. I did finish it even though I struggled with it. I did like the writing, but it just wasn't enough to save the story for me.

I would recommend that everyone--everyone--read each book of hers, in order, and this one last, as it is the culmination of all of the other books. But even better, buy this book, read it, go back and read the others and then read this again! This is the best of all of her books, as well as a prescription for being alive now, of being a citizen, a human being, a kind and caring and loving person--now--at this time in history. It is about how to be brave, kind, and good--no matter what your faith or lack of faith--and of dealing with the fractionalization of our country and of moving towards a re-humanizing (as opposed to dehumanizing) of our communities and families and other relationships, of transforming conflict in brave and true ways.

The book's theme is "true belonging", which the author defines as: "...the spiritual practice of believing in and belonging to yourself so deeply that you can share your most authentic self with the world and find sacredness in both being a part of something and standing alone in the wilderness. True belonging doesn't require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are." This might sound a bit unusual, but the book unfolds this idea in beautiful ways that truly will appeal to every reader--no matter what your ideology (including religious and political), no matter what your race, gender, or background.

Read this book; I cannot convey in a review how much it has the potential to change your life for the better. I read it yesterday and today in two sittings and am going back again and again to the writing, the ideas, and the inspiration to me to life more authentically and to be able to connect with others in deeper and braver ways.

• I've been staring at the computer screen for about 10 minutes now, trying to start this review, and having no idea how to do so. I just can't make the words come out, and writing the review terrifies me, and makes me feel a little ill. You see, I didn't buy, or read this book because I know the author or her work. I did both because the content sounded interesting, and because I needed my next big review. Yes, I read this book so I could review it, which is where the ill part enters. I started working toward being an Top 1000 reviewer about a year ago. Not because I really cared about the rank...it was just a goal. Something intangible I could work toward. And I chose it, because sad though it is, my reviews on and Goodreads are the last place in this entire world where I am willing to communicate, in any capacity, with other human beings. They're all I have left.
  
  I live a sad life. I have no friends and I'm lonely... So lonely that as I type this I feel like crying, even though I accepted this as my reality a long time ago. I cancelled facebook two years ago. I lost my last real friend three years ago. I struggle to call and make appointments because it requires talking to strangers, and for this reason I also can't go to the grocery store, or the gas station, or any other list of a hundred places that normal people go to have normal lives.
  
  You see, I decided five years ago that I was done with fitting in, and that I'd rather be lonely and alone, than to continue immersing myself in a world I found caustic.
  
  Everywhere I looked people seemed to be shouting, trying to make their voices heard. The most recent clever story on facebook. The most wittily stated opinion. I didn't see kindness, I saw intolerance and rudeness. I saw people ripping each other down through the medium of social media because they didn't have to look that person in the face, and see how their comments hurt them. Then I watched as that attitude seemed to make people less tolerant in the real world as well. I wanted no part of it anymore. From that point on I was standing alone, and that was that. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but as the years have passed, I've cut myself so far off from humanity that it feels like I'm the only person left in my world. It hurts, SO much, but I don't know how to undo it. I don't know how to go back.
  
  At least...I didn't. I know this review is already too long, and all I've done is clumsily muddle my way through it—attempting to express something I don't even know if others will understand. This is frustrating for me, because I don't want to talk about myself, and doing so is terrifying, particularly after so many years of silence. But I didn't know how else to express the impact this book had on me, without first talking about how much pain I've been in, and how nefarious my reasons for reading it in the first place. I got the "standing alone" part down pat. I did that years ago. The part I couldn't find, that maybe I'd never have found on my own, is the part where I know how to belong to something again. Join the world. Feel a connection to life and humanity.
  
  I cried just about the entire duration of this book. I got it because it sounded "interesting", but I feel like it opened up a hole in the side of my sad little world. I didn't think it would apply to me, but it's changed my life. I expected to write an honest, clinical review discussing its contents from a dispassionate point of view. But instead, here I am, still clumsily attempting to convey my feelings in the hopes that some part of this review might encourage even one other person to read this book.
  
  Everyone should read this book. Everyone who wants to stand alone, but still belong. Everyone who already is alone, and wants to be a part of something again. Everyone who is tired of a humanity that is separated. Give it a shot. If nothing else, get the sample chapters, and see if there's something in it that might speak to you.
  
  And if my review is clumsy, I sincerely apologize. Please don't let that turn you off from the book. It changed my life, and I think it can do as much for many.
  
  EDIT It's been 6 months since I wrote this review, and when I said this book changed my life, it did. Oh, how it did! I got into therapy. I've made some friends who share my interests, and even many of my anxieties. I no longer feel lonely or threatened. If anyone out there struggles as I did, please know that help is available, and change is possible. All it takes is one moment that changes all other moments. For me, that was this book! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all of you who have supported me, and supported each other. Humanity is far more wonderful than I once believed!!!

• My 3rd grader (nine year old son) thinks these are the funniest, best reads yet. They totally helped him transition into becoming an avid silent reader - on his own - as the vocabulary is perfectly challenging, the flow of the words is comfortable and natural, and the tone of the book is ideal for his age. The greatest part - I loved these when I was his age, and I get to share in the stories and relive a part of my childhood all over again. He gets a kick out of reading to me and to his dad, and we laugh together. Ironically, my son has homeschooled since first grade, so some of the details allow me to share my school stories with him - but the beauty of Sachar's stories is that they are a world of their own and one gets drawn into them regardless of one's own background. Absolute fun.
• These stories were childhood classics growing up. I am now sharing these stories with my daughter. My daughter now wants me to read these stories on a nightly basis. The stories are a little cheesy, but they still make me laugh. Overall, these stories are great as each chapter only takes a couple of minutes to read & although the language has a few rude words such as "stupid" it is still tamer than most of what kids are reading today. I also like how even though the stories are fictional & often have all sorts of nonsense, it also allows readers to use their imagination, which is key for kids that are part of the target population.
• I taught elementary school for over 30 years. Every year I would read these books to my students. We laughed everyday when we would read about the different students. My students would make references throughout the day to the stories. For instance they would say no Sammie’s allowed in the class. I One of my students was a non reader. He told me his goal was to learn to read so he could read the books for himself. He finally got from me a gift of the books to make that a reality. I never tired of reading the stories to the children.i even got a set for my grandson and my daughter in law sent me a photo of him reading.
• My 9 year old could not put these books down. The reading level was a bit lower than he usually reads but he thought the stories were really funny. There are 3 short books - around 100 pages each but they are a good break from longer books or for kids just getting into longer chapter books. We have thoroughly enjoyed all the books from this author - Holes is one of our all-time-favorite books. I would recommend this set to kids from ages 7-10. Happy reading!!
• I was not familiar with this series, but when I asked, my DIL said she thought my 8 yr old grandson would like them. They have been reading them at bedtime, and she was right. He loves them. Grandpa even read to him one night and said they laughed and really enjoyed them.
• This series of books got my 7 year old grand daughter, Grace in trouble with her teacher at school! Remembering how great each book was I purchased her the series. Her teacher was reading it aloud to the class and Grace absolutely could NOT put it down. Of course she soon was ahead of the read aloud in the classroom and she told one of her friends what happened next and the teacher found out. Then called the teacher called Grace to account for a) reading ahead and b) telling her friend what happened next. GREAT BOOK SERIES! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND FOR THE 7 AND 8 year old range. (But don't tell the next thing that happens if your teacher is reading aloud!)
• I bought these as a gift for my boyfriends son. He is in second grade and has to read every night but hasn't been very excited about it. I remembered these books from when I was younger and I thought that he might enjoy them. We haven't gotten to them just yet because I think that they are still a little bit advanced for him but we will start them right after we finish Captain Underpants. I am really looking forward to reading these books again!
• I read these stories when I was little and loved them. I happened to run across the trilogy on and got it to read my daughter. So far these are her favorite stores, we have to read 1-2 of these a night. We just finished the books, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she wants me to start over from the beginning.
