Salmon hatch in rivers then journey to the sea, where they spend most of their adult lives. When mature, they leave the sea and work their way back up to their spawning ground. The smell of the water flowing into the ocean from the river or stream helps them to find their way. Near the end of their lifecycle, the surviving adults spawn in the streams where they hatched years before. Fish that make this journey from salt to fresh water to spawn are called anadromous.

"I was amazed at the quality of words chosen in the writing of 'The Amazing Journey of Solomon the Sockeye Salmon'. It is not easy to write a scientifically accurate book for children and Pamela Cannalte is such a gifted writer! I loved how every bit of the colorful page was full of the most interesting facts. Not many books have me literally looking all around the page, as hers did, but this was such a fun way to draw in more facts on subject. There was a different written line at the bottom of each page that encourages the reader to go back and find something of interest. As an adult, I actually learned so many things from reading 'The Amazing Journey of Solomon the Sockeye Salmon', that I did not know before!
The Glossary in the back of the book is brilliant as is the Life Stages of the Alaskan Sockeye Salmon pages featured on both the back cover and an inside cover page. A very lovely and relevant map graces the inside front and back cover pages.
Steven Beutler provides the enthralling illustrations and Jody Mattics has indeed complimented this fascinating hardcover book with positive layouts and design. Joining the author, Pamela Cannalte, these three have 'triple-teamed' instruction into fun learning! I can't wait to see any future collaborations from this trio!"

The Amazing Journey of Solomon the Sockeye Salmon Pamela Cannalte Steven Beutler Jody Mattics Books Reviews
- Quality is the one word I can think of when looking at this book. From the words, to the pictures, and finally the materials.
The book starts off describing the life stages of the Alaskan sockeye salmon. Throughout the book are little tidbits of educational information for children of all ages. The story is about a sockeye salmon named Solomon. From egg to spawning salmon the story is a very heartwarming one about a salmon's life and all the challenges it faces. The author is very talented indeed.
The illustrations are another reason I use the term quality. Every page is filled with beautiful drawings that compliment the writing in a very special way. The illustrator did a great job integrating the pictures to show little tidbits of educational information and questions at the bottom of each page. Each page is full of color and great drawings which will appeal to children and adults alike.
Finally, the book is made from very high quality materials. The hardcover is nice and thick and the pages inside are a nice thick semi glossy material. Even the inside cover is made from extra thick matte paper printed with a map which shows the Journey of salmon. It even includes a place to dedicate the book to a loved one if you were giving this as a gift. I included a picture of the front inside cover.
Overall, very nicely done! This is a great addition to my children's bookshelf, and one that they read over and over again. I'm sure this book will be very popular and sell plenty of copies. - A beautifully illustrated and well written book about the life-cycle of salmon. Each page encourages interaction by asking the child (or reader) to look at the illustrations and answer a question related to the story. A great book for a parent or grand parent to read to their children!
- This is a great book for kids of all age's, it is also a great learning tool in a classroom.
