This is a story set in early 1900 Long Island, NY in the town of Bay Shore. The story centers on a young man sent to stay with an uncle whom he never knew existed when his only other living relative passes away. The uncle is a market gunner, providing waterfowl for the tables of New York restaurants. He is a cruel and abusive man who lives with his young wife on the shores of the Great South Bay. Their lives collide in a tragic love triangle stretching from the waters of Long Island to the streets of New York City. It is a coming of age story touching upon topics of love, obsession, immigration, and racism.

"I lived in Bay Shore, New York from 1954 to 1962. From 1959 to 1961 I delivered NEWSDAY on 5 different routes to include Harrison Avenue. In my opinion with the different routes delivering papers I feel I have a good understanding how the hamlet is laid out. Note, Bay Shore never has been incorporated and is part of the Town of Islip. Most books I read it just seems an exercise of reading words, this author uses his craft to draw a person into the book and feel absorbed into the plots. If I were teaching English in high school it would be required reading based on many levels. One thing teenagers would learn is life is pretty good today compared to how youth earned their keep back in 1902 in Bay Shore. A must read."

  • I’m from three generations of Bay Shore residents and my grandmother would have lived in a house by the railroad at that time, so I was anxious to read this book. I didn’t expect to be drawn into a rather complex relationship with the characters as they unfolded. Although only a few specific areas were mentioned by name, I could almost picture myself observing as I followed the character’s movements from Great South Bay to NYC. It was surprisingly unpredictable and kept me reading for two nights straight. Great shocking story of small town news you might find on the front page of a historic paper of that time. Great Read Gerry!
  • Coming from Brightwaters, right next to and really part of this novel, It was great fun reading about that local area in a historical setting. The story was both uplifting in parts, and sad in parts. The author's description of the characters and their interactions were all believable and genuine. I loved some characters, hated others. Which is what I am sure the author intended. I hate to delve too deeply and spoil the storyline for others, but I recommend the book without reservation!!
  • The following review came from a person (my courageous best friend) who lives in a Florida State Correctional facility for 28+ years of his 46 in this world...
“just an FYI... I usually read a book in 2 or 3 days and you can probably imagine how many books I've read in my journey behind these walls, but your friend's book is like a good movie you don't want to end. I can't believe that's his first book, but I do know that some people are born/blessed with natural talent. He's good. He knows how to keep the reader "wrapped" in the story.
    Thank you."
  • Love this book it was sooooo good highly recommend the book.........
  • Great read!
Parts that were really dark and I didn’t like the detail but I enjoyed the story. Great writing by my dear friend Gerry!

  • The story pulls you in from the very first few pages. I’m an avid reader and I couldn’t put this book down. The only great thing about finishing it was the opening to a sequel!
I was born and grew up in Bay Shore. My grandparents settled there from Ireland (with many of our relatives).
I felt from descriptions of areas he wrote you know exactly where he’s writing about. The Brighwaters lakes and the canal leading to the great South Bay is right where I was raised. His ability to describe them and let you see how they were at that time is quite talented
The story told was enthralling, it was not cookie cutter at all. Many different twists and turns that kept your interest and attention.
It was an amazing tale of what life was like in that era. How difficult and hard it was for people of many walks of life.
Also a snapshot into their lives as Bay Shore and a lot of Long Island was growing.
Excellent read. Looking forward to more from Gerry!
  • This is a great book that intertwines social and life issues that apply 1900 as well as today. Some passages are so well written they bring you to feeling instead of just reading what the story is telling you. Unique pacing and use of flashbacks in a good way.
