Artist Amanda Rittenhouse is a genius at refashioning old twisted metal into unique sculpture. But the twists of fate in her own life are a lot more challenging. Recovering from a devastating breakup, she returns to North Carolina and reconnects with the family she hasn’t seen since she left her dysfunctional home when she turned 18.

Despite dealing with some residual mama drama and a new extended family, Amanda decides to stay and try to refashion her own life. She rents a workspace and booth at Metrolina Tradeshow Expo, one of the largest arts and antiques shows in the country. The other tenants are as varied as their wares and run the gamut from kooky to creepy.

Although Amanda’s mom’s skill as an amateur sleuth has earned her the local reputation as “a crime scene waiting to happen,” the biggest mystery in Amanda’s life right now is whether or not the incredibly attractive sister of one of the other exhibitors is straight. Until one of the exhibitors makes a sensational announcement that turns Metrolina’s opening weekend into chaos on steroids. And exposes its dark underbelly of greed, jealousy…and murder.

An Amanda Rittenhouse Mystery Book 1.

"Pleasant enough book but I found it only an average read. The writing seemed a little simplistic, with no depth in the prose. The mystery plot wasn't too bad and held my interest for a while. The romance was the weakest part of the book. It seemed contrived and forced, and didn't ring true. Amanda had only left her ex a month before and was ready to bolt into another relationship which seemed odd."

Murder at Metrolina Kate Merrill 9781594935329 Books Reviews

  • The twists and turns in this mystery will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. Murder and intrigue haunt exhibitors as people from all over the country come to see what treasures they can find at one of the largest flea markets in the country. A rare, historic and very valuable letter creates suspense and danger for all involved in this thrilling book.
  • In one word Meh. This is, technically, a mystery in the american style of procedurals. We are not given access to all the clues, and the sleuth isn't as much sleuthing as stumbling - in this context not a negative; it's a regular person caught up in very irregular business. No Holmes, no Poirot, no Fletcher.

It's not a bad read, mind you, if a little short; it's just not a very good one. The will-read-again score is very low.
  • Amanda Rittenhouse is an artist who gives old, twisted metal new life. She is recovering from a devastating breakup and has returned to North Caralina where she reconnects with her family who she left when she was eighteen. She rents a work space and booth at Metrolina Trade show Expo, which is one of the largest arts and antiques shows in the country. Her fellow tenants are a varied lot, as are their wares. One of the booths is rented by a brother and sister. Amanda is quite taken with the sister, but. . . is she straight or gay? Then, a valuable antique is stolen and a dead body is discovered. Amanda is experiencing enough drama with her family, and finding even more drama at work.
Merrill has given her readers a lively read with well developed and likeable characters. As she owns an art gallery I had to wonder if some of the artists were based on some she's known!
  • I have read Kate Merrill's Diana Rittenhouse series and really loved the transfer of many of those characters to the Amanda Rittenhouse series. Amanda is an interesting and complex character, As she adjusts to her new life in North Carolina, comes to grips with old and unresolved issues with her mother, deals with the devastation of her failed relationship with her longtime partner in Florida and dares to explore new love with Sara, she reveals both her courage and conflicts. Amanda is human, both brave and flawed. I also enjoyed the details about her profession as as a metal welder and the creation of her funky outsider sculpture as well as the Metrolina setting. Couple those elements with a fast-paced and exciting plot, I found this book to be a great read and look forward to the next in the series.
  • Pleasant enough book but I found it only an average read. The writing seemed a little simplistic, with no depth in the prose. The mystery plot wasn't too bad and held my interest for a while. • Colorful characters, great suspense, interesting twists and turns, exciting action, a sweet and satisfying love story -- I give Murder at Metrolina an A for each of the above. On top of all this, the book will keep readers on the edge of their seats throughout – and really, can a murder mystery novel earn any higher praise than this?

28-year-old Amanda Rittenhouse is a metal sculptor having problems with girlfriends, both old and new. After moving from Florida to North Carolina (in part to leave behind a former partner), she meets a new love interest in her new home town, a psychotherapist named Sara. In the meantime, Amanda’s family and friends convince her to rent space in an art studio that includes a cast of several eccentric artists/exhibitors. It is in this building – “Metrolina” -- that the murder happens. Any one of Metrolina’s artists could be guilty of murder, but one of the most likely suspects is Sara herself, who is the sister of the artist housed across the hall from Amanda.

As usual, Kate Merrill’s writing is a joy to read. An example of her evocative prose “Something about the African woman’s eyes drew her into their fast amber current, until that river turned dark and stormy when she mentioned the fight.”

For readers of Merrill’s Diana Rittenhouse series, the main character in this book is Diana’s daughter, and many of your favorite characters in the former series seem destined to appear in this one.
  • Wonderful book! In the hands of this extremely capable author, the reader quickly feels at home in Troutman, NC, and quickly feels affection for these interesting characters. Ms. Merrill knows how to create a sense of place and how to flesh out the varied people who live there so that both place and people are fully formed and real. The plot is riveting and moves along at just the right pace. It's always a pleasure to begin a new book by Kate Merrill. This is her best one yet.
